Self-Efficacy equals High Personal Performance
According to Albert Bandura, perceived self-efficacy is; 
people’s beliefs about their capabilities to produce designated levels of performance that exercise influence over events that affect their lives. Self-efficacy beliefs determine how people feel, think, motivate themselves and behave.

In common parlance, it is one’s belief in his/her ability to form coping mechanisms in a given environment or situation. 

The attitude of people with strong self-efficacy that enhances human accomplishment and personal performance as Bandura indicates is: 
  • Consider problematic situations as challenges to be overcome rather than threats that have to be deflected or evaded.
  • Set demanding goals and keep themselves strongly committed to them.
  • Intensify and persevere in their efforts when confronted with failure.
  • Recover their sense of self-efficacy swiftly after setbacks or failures.
  • Ascribe failure to inadequate effort or insufficient skill or knowledge which can be acquired.
  • Approach menacing situations with the confidence that they have complete control over them.

It is even possible for an individual with lesser capability but with a heightened sense of self-efficacy to outperform someone who is more capable. 

By developing and building one’s self-efficacy, individuals can improve their performance. They can set themselves challenging goals but with a pragmatic confidence of achieving these goals. When met with setbacks, individuals with a strong sense of self-efficacy will forge on and would even consider the setbacks as additional challenges to be conquered with more determination and effort. 


How to build self-efficacy 

According to Bandura, individual’s belief about their self-efficacy can be developed by four principal influences:
  • Mastery experience
  • Vicarious experiences provided by peers
  • Social persuasion 
  • Efficacy training from efficacy and performance builders
With these four sources of potential increase of self-efficacy, here are four strategies on how to build or increase it:
  1. Build on past experiences: Previous experiences are strong elements that affect self-efficacy. These experiences involve successes in overcoming hindrance through persistence and indefatigable efforts. Even past failures and setbacks should serve as teaching “schools” that success needs sustained effort at all times. Once individuals are convinced that they have what it takes to succeed, they stand firm when confronted with difficulties and will bounce back swiftly from failure or setbacks. When people stand firm in adversities they come up stronger and tougher. 
  2. Having role models: Observing people considered by an individual as a role model succeed with persistence and unrelenting effort will give that individual a sense that he/she too could achieve the same success in mastering comparable challenges. The greater the similarity is between the role model and the observer, the more effective is the impact of a role model’s success on the observer’s self-efficacy. 
  3. Social persuasion or positive feedback: Positive feedback also help to improve an individual’s self-efficacy, especially those who are influenced by words of encouragement coming from people they hold in high esteem. Positive feedback and assurance that they have what it takes to succeed and overcome hurdles will embolden an individual to exert more effort, thereby developing a higher sense of self-efficacy. 
  4. Self-efficacy and personal performance training and coaching from experts: Successful self-efficacy and performance coaches can help in building self-efficacy. They not only give positive feedback but also provide structured and integrated approach in learning the behaviors that will unlock a person’s potential and belief in one self.
